Awards 2002: Public Private Finance Awards - Winner: Best Education Project Below £20m (Architect)
JFS (formerly the Jews’ Free School) is the largest Jewish school in the country and includes classrooms and labs, a synagogue, a theatre, a main hall, a sports complex, a dining atrium and conference facilities.
The design process involved close liaison with the school and the incorporation of details such as religious artefacts.
The school is based around three internal landscaped courtyards linked with covered roofs. Each identifies different years within the school and provides a secure environment for students. External features include a library cloister, an amphitheatre and outdoor performance, seating and dining areas.
The layout follows a serpentine, curved form, leading from the synagogue to the sports facilities. This forms a connective focal point linking the buildings, acting as the main artery for the teaching blocks and other accommodation.
