The practice prepared the masterplan for the expansion of the university’s campus, to double its size to meet short term growth needs and to allow the university to plan for the next 20 years.
We proposed a series of forums to explore ideas and new possibilities. These were instrumental in establishing the future vision for the expanded university, which involves new buildings set along the contours of a shallow hill, beneath new woodland and overlooking a river feature.
The plans restrict cars to courtyard areas, and linear civic space links existing campus buildings with the proposed administrative, research and teaching facilities. This establishes a broad, car-free area where students, visitors and York residents can meet, exchange ideas and relax in a pleasant, safe and sheltered environment.
We provided urban design evidence at a public inquiry into the outline planning application. The Secretary of State subsequently granted consent.
