Terence O’Rourke Ltd was commissioned by Husen Developments Ltd to develop a design strategy for the redevelopment of a waterside site within Poole, Dorset. In a setting that has now become famous for its large, prestigious properties, the client wanted to create a distinct, contemporary house that maximised the beautiful views of Poole Bay and Brownsea Island.
The accommodation wraps around a triple height internal void, which provides a heart for the home and gives a simple organisation to the sequence of spaces and rooms. The house is clad with a mixture of brown scalloped terracotta tiles and ivory through-coloured render. Special design features include a floating floor in the swimming pool to turn the pool into a dance floor, an underground 8-person cinema and electromagnetic glazing which at the flick of a switch turns the glazing from solid to transparent exposing the fabulous views of Brownsea Island.
The project was completed in December 2010 at an approximate construction cost of £1.8 million, delivering an area of approximately 800sqm.
