Terence O’Rourke was commissioned by Clark Estates Ltd to prepare a design strategy for the redevelopment and replacement of a large mock-Tudor country house to the north east of Wimborne Minster in Dorset. The client wanted to create a distinct, contemporary house that maximised the beautiful views of the country estate.

The design combined a high specification building and quality of finish, with integral self-imposed sustainability credentials. The main accommodation wraps around a double height internal void, which provides a simple organisation to the sequence of spaces and rooms. The uncomplicated palette of external materials included cream coloured bricks and ivory through-coloured render. Design features included a swimming pool, wine cellar, gun/boot room and 8-person cinema.

The property was orientated to gain from passive solar design, minimising the window openings on the north facades and providing fixed external terraces as solar shading and solar control glazing to the south. These features help create a highly sustainable and energy efficient building that is comfortable to live in.

The project was completed in July 2013 at an approximate construction cost of £2.1million delivering an area of approximately 850sqm.
