Client Briefing - The Draft New London Plan: What’s Next Post Publication?

After 34 days of hearings sessions and a grand total of 94 matters, the draft London Plan examination concluded on the 22nd May. As the ink dries on the new London Plan and we await the Inspector Panel’s decision in September, we consider the key challenges and opportunities provided by the plan and potential strategies to bolster housing delivery across the capital.

A key tenet of the new draft London Plan is a focus on ‘Good Growth’, that is growth that is socially and economically inclusive and environmentally sustainable. In the context of a fall in new build housing however, can the Mayor’s good growth deliver the number of homes that London actually needs? Over the last five years, London’s average population growth was 1.4%, but its housing growth was only 0.8%.
