“Through a carefully managed strategy, Terence O’Rourke was able to find solutions to considerable planning problems, with a very successful result for us.”
PETER O’HALLORAN, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz World
DaimlerChrysler identified Brooklands in Surrey, the site of the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit, as the ideal location for its flagship UK Mercedes-Benz World.
Owing to its position in the metropolitan green belt, its designation as a conservation area and scheduled monument, and concerns over flooding and traffic impact, the development raised significant planning considerations.
Working closely with Elmbridge Borough Council we led the process of consultation, environmental impact assessment and overall project design to gain planning consent and avoid a public inquiry. The project’s many benefits include a 24-hectare community park, improvements to local flooding and highway problems and the production and implementation of a conservation plan in association with English Heritage (now Historic England).
We continue to work in close association with Mercedes-Benz and Elmbridge Borough Council to ensure that Mercedes-Benz World is able to evolve and adapt to meet changing market expectations.
This project was awarded a national RTPI Award for Heritage.
